There are quite a lot paintings to chose among but I really like this one the most. The Astronomer and The Geographer are my favorite paintings. In my opinion these two paintings are full of possibilities, mostly The Astronomer. I don’t know why exactly but this picture is the one that tells me more.
I think that it is mostly because we are 100% free to imagine, write and tell the story that we like the most. We can change this character and his trade into whatever we want, we can imagine and make the character face any kind of situation. I can just see the painting and tell the story that it transmits me. The funny thing about this project is that a couple of us might chose the same painting and still tell a completely different story.
To sum up, as I said before I am going to work with the painting of The Astronomer. Since one of Vemeer’s habit was to sign the painting under the name of what one could see in the picture, my choice is clearly an astronomer working on his office. He is sitting in front of a book and a globe.

Johannes Vermeer, also known as Jan or Johan was born in Delft on 1632 and he was buried in the same city in 1675. He was a Baroque painter who became famous painting everyday scenes of the middle age class lifestyle.
He was not very much known outside his circle probably because he mostly worked “genre painter” . He produced few paintings and he never became specially wealthy, he even left his wife and children debt at his death.
As I mentioned before, he is a painter that was involved in the Baroque period or movement during the 17th century. This period meant a whole change of perspective in the art world, including painting, architecture and sculpture. Baroque art is characterized by great drama, rich, deep color, and intense light and dark shadows. As opposed to Renaissance art, which usually showed the moment before an event took place, Baroque artists chose the most dramatic point, the moment when the action was occurring.
Vermeer is particularly known for his masterly treatment and use of the light in his works clearly showing the influence of this new period called Baroque. He worked slowly and with great care, using bright colours and sometimes expensive pigments, with a preference for cornflower blue and yellow.

This last semester we are going to work on our last subject related to this blog’s articles : English for special purposes. The name might take a very wide field but in this case we are going to focus on the study of a nowadays well known painter from the 17th century : Johannes or Jan Vermeer.
The course is mostly focused in the famous painting “The Girl with a Pearl Earring”, it is about an interactive study of the painting through the painting itself, the book and the movie version.
It is definetely a different way of presenting and studying a subject but I really like the idea of being able to work on something like that with the flexibility and freedom that we have.
In this course we have to work on two different projects : first we have to choose the painting that we are going to be working on and make a short presentation about it and then, we have to work on a story related to what the painting shows.

As I have mentioned before in the other articles, we have been working with two main corporas : the BNC and the ANC. I already explain what both corporas are about and now I am going to show the two main differences that exist between the both of them.
Aesthetically: It seems that the American National Corpus has a long way to go before it becomes something like the BNC. The latter, seems to be more clear in its presentation and more understandable whereas the former seems to be more technical (for expert users). In the BNC everything is well organized and it easier to find the our way in the page. In the ANC everything gets a little more fuzzy and it is not difficult to get lost in the technical jergon it uses.
Technically (Search Engine): The first advantage of the British National Corpus is that its search engine is online wheareas the ANC’s you have to download it and install it in your computer (4GB approximately). That is a great disadvantage to the ANC because it is tedious to install that ammount of data you might never need to use in your computer. However, there is an option to using the ANC, the Corpus of Contemporary American English which seems to be a more sophisticated way of searching words. The BNC is easier to use, within one click you can find whatever you are looking for, and you will be showed 50 examples of the word you searched in different contexts. The sources of the phrases showed in the BNC are perfectly acknoledged, which is also one of the features of the ANC. As a matter of fact, the search engine used in the BNC is SARA and the one used in the ANC is Xaira.
We will be using both in our project, so we have to say that they both work quite well when dealing with words and phrases in different contexts. Personally, we think that although the registration procedure that has to be done on the CCAE, this one is the best corpus.

American National Corpus
The American National Corpus (ANC) project creates a huge electronic collection of American English, that include texts of all types of genres and transcripts of spoken American English from 1990 to the actual date. Anyone can contribute to the system adding text and transcripts. The American National Corpus is created to provide a more comprehensive picture of the American English, and to serve as a resource for students, linguistic and lexicographic research, and technology development.
It is remarkable to say that the ANC is not still completed but when finished, it will contain a core corpus of at least 100 million words, comparable to the British National Corpus (BNC). The corpus will also include several hundreds of millions of words, in order to provide both the largest selection of texts. The ANC has so far released 22 million words of American English.

The British National Corpus (BNC) is a 100 million word collection of samples of written and spoken language from a wide range of sources, designed to represent a wide cross-section of British English from the later part of the 20th century, both spoken and written.
The written part of the BNC (90%) includes, for example, extracts from regional and national newspapers, specialist periodicals and journals for all ages and interests, academic books and popular fiction, published and unpublished letters and memoranda, school and university essays, among many other kinds of text.
The spoken part (10%) consists of orthographic transcriptions of unscripted informal conversations (recorded by volunteers selected from different age, region and social classes in a demographically balanced way) and spoken language collected in different contexts, ranging from formal business or government meetings to radio shows and phone-ins.
